By harnessing the power of the sun, wind, and water, people all over are beginning to produce their own power. Pollution-free, reliable electricity that helps lighten our load on the need for fossil fuels. The use of renewable energy sources increases our self-sufficiency while lessening pollution, saving money, being "greener", and most importantly, just knowing your doing the right thing.

Legislative Update - October 7th, 2008

On Friday, October 3rd, the U.S. House of Representatives passed historic legislation that extends the 30-percent federal investment tax credit (ITC) for both residential and commercial solar installations for 8 years.  It is the one of the most significant federal policies ever enacted for the solar industry.  Below, we highlight what this will mean specifically for your business as the solar industry in the United States continues to grow.

What Does the Legislation Do?

The solar federal investment tax credit (ITC) provisions will:

  • Extend for 8 years the 30-percent ITC for both residential and commercial solar installations; this credit will provide a tax credit equal to 30-percent of the difference between the cost of your system and any available state and local grants.
  • Eliminate the $2,000 monetary cap for residential solar electric installations, creating a true 30-percent tax credit (effective for property placed in service after December 31, 2008);
  • Eliminate the prohibition on utilities from benefiting from the credit;
  • Allow Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) filers, both businesses and individuals, to take the credit;
  • Authorize $800 million for clean energy bonds for renewable energy generating facilities, including solar.

    One of the biggest misconceptions about alternative energy is that it's only for the folks on the "West Coast", or that Virginia doesn't receive enough sunlight to be productive, or that the cost is just too ridiculous for the average resident or business owner.     ...(all of these are wrong!)

     The only thing stopping most consumers from making the switch to "Green Power" is a lack of understanding. Virginia receives plenty of sun for a productive solar system and the state as well as federal governments has incentives to offset the initial cost as well as "net metering" allowing you to sell back any over-produced power you generate with your alternative energy system. This goes the same for wind power as well.
